The Escape and the C-Max are very similar, as you noticed. A lot of the parts are even interchangable. They're both built from the Ford C1 platform. The biggest difference is obviously the drivetrain. I suggest you drive both and choose the one you like better. The C-Max is a surprisingly fun car to drive.
